Persons are eligible for this student employment with Parks provided they are:
registered as a full time or part-time post secondary student in an accredited academic program.

Persons employed under one of the approved student employment programs may work:
for a maximum of four months immediately following their final academic term;
full time or part time during the non academic term;
part time during the academic term.

Assessment accommodation

The Jasper Field Unit is hiring students to deliver Interpretation, Visitor Information, and Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention services to park visitors. If you apply on this selection process you are not applying to a specific job, but to three hiring streams within the Visitor Experience department: Interpretation, Visitor Information Services, and Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention .

In your cover letter, tell us about yourself and why you are interested in working in Visitor Experience in Jasper National Park (JNP). Tell us what skills and experience you will bring to the team and what you would like to learn from working at JNP.

Please confirm you are registered as a student in a recognized institution (CEGEP, College, University, etc.).

Please also indicate whether or not you have experience working in team environments. If you have experience in customer service and/or working directly with the public, in using computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel. Please let us know if you have experience in public speaking, delivering presentations and/or group facilitation, include it in your application. If you have experience or training in the performing arts, please also let us know.

Stream 1: Interpretation

Student will facilitate experiences for visitors that provide a deeper understanding of, and meaningful connection to, Parks Canada places. Students will attend park interpreter training sessions and be paired with experienced interpreters during daily tasks and duties, including:
A variety of formal presentations and informal conversations in diverse settings and environments both indoors and outdoors.
Students may learn and practice the roles and responsibilities of a Living with Wildlife interpreter while delivering Human-Wildlife Coexistence messages to visitors.
Students will also learn and practice the roles and responsibilities of other forms of park interpretation.

Stream 2: Information Services

Student will support the day to day operations of the Information Services team. Duties include but are not limited to:
Respond to visitor inquiries in person, via phone and email.
Collect and share up to date and accurate information on a wide variety of subjects, in a professional manner.
Sell various park passes and permits.
Learn and follow established procedures and processes.
Help maintain Information Services facilities to health and safety standards.

Stream 3: Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention

Student will support the day to day operations of the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention team. Duties include but are not limited to:
Respond to visitor inquiries in person, via phone and email.
Conduct surveys, and complete data collection and input.
Sharing stories and information related to the importance of aquatic invasive species prevention.
Assist in the delivery of watercraft screenings, inspections, and decontaminations.
Conduct basic monitoring of waterbodies for aquatic invasive species.

Students may be assigned special projects or learning opportunities to gain experience within the Parks Canada Agency while exploring topics of interest related to conservation, wildlife and human wildlife coexistence, aquatic invasive species, species at risk, park management, seasonal operations, and history.
Intent of the process
This process will be used to fill five student vacancies for the Spring and Summer of 2023 (May to early-September 2023).

This process may be used to create a list of qualified candidates to staff similar positions with various tenures, security levels or linguistic requirements in the same or other parts of the country.

Reliability Status security clearance - You are required to obtain and maintain this security level throughout this employment at Parks Canada Agency.

Other Conditions of Employment:
You will be required to possess and maintain a valid Class 5 driver’s licence recognized by the province/territory applicable to this offer of employment.
You will be required to work shift-work, and/or weekends, and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays as scheduled by your delegated manager. Compensation will be as prescribed in the Terms and Conditions of Employment applicable to you.
You must be willing to work and travel in a variety of terrains and weather conditions in the performance of the duties.
You will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
You may be required to wear a uniform while performing your duties. In this case, Parks Canada will provide you with the uniforms you require in accordance with the Parks Canada Uniform Policy.
