Position Overview

The SkyTram Guide is a unique position, requiring an upbeat and animated individual who enjoys dealing with and speaking directly to small groups while ascending and descending the mountain in the tram. They enhance our guests’ experience by providing information about the surrounding area of Jasper, local history, wildlife, and geologic information. As this is such a unique position, specialized hands-on training is provided.

SkyTram Guides operate the daily tram departures within a team rotation of 5 people while communicating effectively with the Guest Services/Ticket Sales department. The rotation includes the positions of the Tram Car Operator, Ticket Checker and General Duties. All positions have their own unique responsibilities throughout the day.

This is a full-time seasonal position available between March and November. Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply. Wage starts at $17.75/hr.

What does a day in the life of a Tram Guide at Jasper SkyTram look like?

The SkyTram hours of operation vary during the time of the season. For the shoulder seasons (Spring and Fall) there is just one shift during the day. During the Summer months, there are 2 shifts (morning and afternoon/evening). Morning shifts start as early as 7:30 AM and afternoon shifts around 2/3:00 PM. A complimentary staff shuttle is available to transport everyone between the mountain and staff accommodation located in the Jasper townsite. You will arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the public in order to receive the days updates from your supervisor and run through operational/safety checks. This includes testing your hand-held 2-way radio, ensuring that the tramcar is operational through various checks with your teammates and moving any contractors and /or staff to the Upper Station to start their day. During the peak season (July, August) it’s not uncommon for guests to be on site and waiting for the tram to open so it’s important to efficiently work through the opening checks.

Once the opening duties are completed, we are ready to start public flights up Whistlers Mountain!

As the day progresses, you will rotate between Ticket Checker, General Duties and being the actual Tram Guide in the tram every hour. This rotation allows the team to maintain different tasks throughout the day and allows you to move around and interact with the guests in a different capacity. The Tram Guide is the one position that receives the most attention from the guests as you are recognized at both the Lower Station and Upper Station as well as the one “in charge” of the “flight” up and down the mountain.

Once you greet all passengers onto the tramcar and confirm with the system that you are locked and ready to go, the tram begins the 7.5 minute ascent/descent. Each Tram Guide delivers their own personalized tour while incorporating the facts and stats provided in training.

As a Ticket Checker, with the help of the Lower Station Shift Leader, you will work together to ready the next group of guests for the next tram “flight” to depart. Keeping an eye of the flight schedule is key in this position as we run trams every 9 minutes. Unloading and loading guests efficiently is key to maintaining the flight schedule.

The General Duties position will be utilized all around the property throughout the day based on weather conditions and how busy the day is. On busy days this person will be positioned wherever an extra set of hands is needed, whether that’s at the Lower Station or the Upper Station. Property cleaning is also a major requirement of this position, so with the help of the Shift Leaders they team up to make sure washrooms, garbage and the property cleanliness is spot on for our guests.

In peak season you’ll work a combination of morning and afternoon shifts to make up your 5 days of work. Mid afternoon there is a 1-hour crossover where the AM and PM shifts work together to do a full property tidy up, and at the same time swap out the AM and PM staff in the 4 positions and continue to running smoothly and efficiently.

At the end of the day, Lift Operations have the responsibility to prepare for the next day by ensuring water tanks are topped up at the Upper Station, all cleaning and garbage is completed across the property and that all guests have been downloaded by the end of the night.

It goes a long way to have passion for hiking, the outdoors, and adventure in general. When you are excited about what you are talking about it will only excite and inspire your passengers on the journey up the mountain. If you come to work excited to inform, with the expectation of having the best view in Jasper everyday, then this would be a good job for you. Staying informed, working within a team or on your own, this will be a summer job we think anyone would enjoy.

Previous lift operations and guide experience is an asset
French as a second language is considered an asset
Job Duties/Responsibilities

Tram Car Operator:
Operate the tram car as per Standard Operating Procedures
Deliver an informative speech/presentation during each tram flight
Learn about and interpret everything local including wildlife, fauna, geology and National Park history
Safely load and unload passengers onto/from the tram cars
Obtain a good working knowledge of passenger evacuation safety procedures
Conduct lift evacuations from tram car at heights of up to 60 meters.
Ticket Checker:
Scan all tickets when passengers are entering the lobby/pre-boarding area
Greet and interact with guests prior to their tram ride
Maintain daily flight logs
Monitor and communicate weather – lightning and winds
Ensure the proper timing of flight departures
Load and unload passengers onto/from the tram cars.
General Duties/Guest Relations:
Load and unload passengers onto/from the tram cars
Keep the property clean and tidy, empty garbage cans and recycling bins
Snow removal or groundskeeping as required (seasonal)
Assist customers, direct people as required around the property
Answer customer questions
Deliver items around the property
Help Upper Station Shift Leader with afternoon crowd control
Cleaning/sanitizing duties as required.
Supplementary:
All Jasper SkyTram employees must complete the required training, including accompanying training checklists, with the end goal of becoming familiar with operating systems and procedures.
All Jasper SkyTram employees will conduct themselves in compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety and WCB legislation as it relates to their job.
